The Season of Christmas proclaims that the long-awaited promise has taken flesh among us. Beginning on Christmas Eve and unfolding through Epiphany to the Transfiguration, this season celebrates not only the birth of Christ, but the mystery that God has chosen to dwell with us.
In Year A of the Revised Common Lectionary, the Gospel readings draw us into Matthew’s telling of this unfolding revelation. We encounter Emmanuel, God-with-us, first in a child laid in a manger, then in the worship of the Magi, the waters of baptism, the calling of disciples, and finally the dazzling vision of Christ’s glory on the mountain. Again and again, God’s light breaks forth in unexpected places, widening the circle of who is welcomed, called, and transformed.
Christmas and Epiphany invite us to move from wonder to witness. As the light grows brighter, we are drawn more deeply into Christ’s mission until, at last, we glimpse the glory that sends us back into the world renewed, attentive, and ready to reflect God’s light for others.
