Our Statement of Justice & Welcome

You are created, cherished, and set free by God! Messiah Lutheran Church is called to trust in the unbounded love and grace of Jesus Christ. Surrounded and blessed by this grace, we work for justice and healing for all. We acknowledge that Christians have not always lived up to this call. At Messiah, we commit to the full participation of those who have historically been excluded by the church because of age, race, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, physical ability, mental wellbeing, or economic circumstance. We also commit ourselves to the challenging yet necessary work of racial equity in both church and society. In all we do, we believe that through openness to one another, we all grow in faith and love.

Messiah is a Reconciling in Christ congregation, joining more than 1,000 congregations in our denomination that are committed, active, and vocal supporters of justice and full inclusion in the church. You can learn more about the Reconciling in Christ network here

What does this mean?
  • LGBTQIA+ folks and their families are fully embraced and accepted at Messiah.
  • LGBTQIA+ members have full access to the sacraments (Communion, Baptism), the rites (Marriage, Funerals), and affirming pastoral care at Messiah.
  • LGBTQIA+ members are invited into all forms of leadership and ministry at Messiah according to the call God has placed on their lives and their ability. In fact, Messiah is proud to have called the first and only openly gay and married senior pastor in Weatherford or in our Synod. LGBTQIA+ people are serving in all levels of leadership and involved in all facets of our congregational life.
  • In the same way that LGBTQIA+ members are invited into full participation in the life of our congregation, we extend the sacraments, fellowship, and ministerial leadership to all people according to the Spirit’s call and their ability, without regard to age, race, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, physical ability, mental wellbeing, or economic circumstance.
  • We recognize that LGBTQIA+ people are not the only ones who have been wrongly excluded and harmed by Christian communities. We commit to ongoing work of listening to, learning from, and advocating for all of those in the Church or our wider community who are oppressed, discriminated against, threatened, or persecuted. To do so is central to what it means to be a Christian community.
