The Advent season gives us some of the most beautiful prophetic songs in scripture—Mary, Zechariah, Simeon, and the angels each lift their voices to announce the coming reign of Christ. These Advent canticles are full of poetic flavor, cherished by families of faith, nourishing, and instructive.....almost like treasured family recipes passed down from one generation to the next.
During our Sunday morning Forum time this Advent, we’ll explore these sacred songs as if they were recipes of faith. What lessons do they carry? What memories do they hold? What practices do they invite us to embrace? Alongside these spiritual recipes we’ll also share literal family recipes! Each week we'll ask a volunteer or two to share a family recipe with us and tell us what stories and lessons it holds for them. If you like, bring copies of the recipe for people to take home and try and/or bring a sample to share. Last, at the end of each session we'll add to our own “Advent recipe cards." Each week we'll write down for ourselves what spiritual ingredients, instructions, tools, and serving suggestions might God is inviting each of us to enjoy this Advent.
So, bring a favorite recipe to share and come reflect on the songs that taught the world to watch for Christ.
